Ann Webster studied at Guildford School of Art before becoming a freelance botanical artist, contributing to Curtiss Botanical magazine, Flora of Tropical East Africa and other Kew publications. Here she can be seen sketching a live specimen of Eulophia horsfallii, a spectacular tall-growing orchid with purple flowers. The photograph, taken in 1951, illustrates the logistical difficulties botanical artists often face when approaching their subject
