On 5th January 1938 an aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing near the Palm House, Kew. It had been pulling an advertising banner, and onlookers said that the pilot would have made a faultless landing had it not been for the left wing striking a tree during the descent, which caused the craft to spin and land nose first. There were no casualties.
