George Appleby

George Appleby joined Kew as a pony-boy (a stable hand), at the age of 14 in April 1931, earning 18 shillings a week. After three years he was promoted to the post of junior Carter, and by 1938 became a full Carter. He continued to work with the horses until he was transferred to the constabulary in 1951. He retired in 1982
