Richard Spruce (1817-1893) botanist and plant collector who was commissioned by William Hooker to transfer the cinchona (quinine) industry from South America to India. Accompanied by Robert Cross, a Kew gardener, he successfully collected and cultivated 637 plants and 100,000 seeds of Cinchona succirubra which were sent to India via Kew.
