Rosa glandulifera, R. (White rose)

Watercolour on paper, no date (late 18th, early 19th century). Hand painted copy of an illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. In his Flora Indica, Roxburgh reports that this species is found in gardens throughout India and commonly called the white rose. Roxburgh also notes that this plant is probably native of China, because it was brought from there into the Botanic garden at Calcutta. It flowers mainly during the cold season
