Watercolour on paper. Original drawing for plate XX in John Lindley's 'Sertum orchidaceum: a wreath of the most beautiful orchidaceous flowers; selected by John Lindley', published in 1838. Part monochromatic part colour study of the leaves, roots and flowers. Also detailed across lower edge of drawing fig. A 'the appearance of the tubercular lining, three of the glittering callosities being cut through', fig. B 'a similar view of the tissue forming the outer surface, at a point where the colour is uniformly yellow', and fig C. 'a similar view of the same part...where the colour is both yellow and purple'. Inscribed across top edge in pencil, 'La Guayra, Mr Loddiges, Sept. 1838', and in another hand 'Rec'd. Sept.15 1925'. Lindley wrote in his 'Sertum', 'That now figured was sent to England from La Guayra by Mr Ward, after whom it has been named by Mr Loddiges, to whom I am indebted for the specimen that furnished the accompanying figure'.
