The background of the table top is probably figured Totara (Podocarpus totara), with some of the larger inlays of Rewa (Knightia excelsa) and Kauri (Agathis australis). The light coloured wood is probably White Pine or Kahikatea (Podocarpus dacrydiodes) and the wood used for reddish brown inlays Rimu or Red Pine (Dacrydium cupressinum). For a full list of the 37 species of fern illustrated, see the illustrated key, stored in the framed art section of the Illustrations Room. Also see detailed article 'A Table of Ferns', by Jennifer Ide, published in the Pteridologist, Volume 3, 5 (2000). A copy of this article is held in the QL file 291B No.22.
Presented to Kew by Miss E.Rose Larkworthy, 1945. In remembrance of Falconer Larkworthy. See File 291B No.22
The table has undergone major restoration in 1992 at David Horden's workshop;most notably a large crack running through the centre of the table was repaired. See file QL291B No.22
