Sydney Albert Pearce, Assistant Curator of the Decorative Department, gives a talk at the Demonstration Plot in front of Kew Palace, 1940. At the outbreak of war, Pearce assumed supervision of the Gardens food plots and allotments. Many of the lawns were ploughed for crop use, and tomatoes were grown in parts of the glasshouses
