Nadeshiko, fringed pinks, cultivated Dianthus superbus var. longicalycinus of Japanese origin, greatly influenced by human cultivation. Manuscript hand painted on paper, Japan, 1828. Pages measure approximately 25 cm in height, from Honzo Zufu or Illustrated manual of medicinal plants by Iwasaki Kan'en, also known as Iwasaki Tsunemasa, 1786-1842. This botanical manual was compiled during the late Tokugawa or Edo period (1603-1868)
