Camarotis purpurea, 1838

Watercolour on paper. Original drawing for plate XIX in John Lindleys Sertum orchidaceum: a wreath of the most beautiful orchidaceous flowers; selected by John Lindley, published in 1838. Monochromatic study in sepia, shows leaves, flowers and roots of plant, with flower details beneath. Inscribed lower left corner, Rec d Sept.15, 1925. According to Lindley, This beautiful and graceful plant, a native of the forests of Sylhet, was originally obtained by Dr Wallich in April 1819, from Dr. Careys Garden at Serampore, when a drawing was made by the artists employed in the Botanic Garden, Calcutta, from which the principal part of the materials for the accompanying figure have been taken
