Watercolour on paper. Original drawing for plate XLIV in John Lindleys Sertum orchidaceum: a wreath of the most beautiful orchidaceous flowers; selected by John Lindley, published in 1838. Illustration shows part monochromatic, part colour study of the inflorescence, with small line drawing to the right giving the general appearance of the plant, and another figure to the left shows the lip, column and spur. Drawing is inscribed top right Mr W.[William] Wells April 30 1840 in pencil. Also inscribed in another hand top left Rec d Sept. 15, 1925. The publication was released in the form of 10 fascicles, beginning 1838; the date of 1840 would therefore correspond with a later fascicle
