Manufacture of Sugar at Katipo
Oil on canvas. Inscription in paint on verso of canvas, Manufacture of Sugar at Katipo. 15 or 20 miles from Tete, cutting lengths of cane, crushing it in mill, boiling, and chrystallisation, July 26, 1859. T.Baines Tete Aug 6 1859'. This process was observed by Baines whilst on Dr. David Livingstone's Zambesi Expedition, the actual painting being executed at a later date at Tete. Another painting by Baines, held at the Royal Geographical Society, illustrates people making the panellas or pots in which the sugar was stored, observed a day after the manufacture of the sugar
