Nymphaea rubra, R
Watercolour on paper, no date (late 18th early 19th century). Hand painted copy of an illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. In his Flora Indica, Roxburgh reports that this species is a native of India and flowers during the rainy season. He also notes that in Bengal, there is a small rose-coloured variety which differs in the number of stamens, having 20 to 25 instead of 40 to 50; and in having from 12 to 15 rays in the stigma
