Dr R. Melville, scientist at Kew, working under Dr Hutchinson, Keeper of Museums, during the 1940 s, is seen here scraping pollen onto glass from a South African marigold. This became part of the National Reference Collection identifying pollen that triggered hayfever. Melville was one of Kews representatives on the British Ministry of Supplys Vegetable Drugs Committee, advising on plant sources for drugs
