Joey the Stanley Crane, Kew Gardens
Joey the Stanley Crane was a well-known Kew personality. In 1935 The Journal of the Kew Guild described his eventful life, which included losing a toe to a lawn mower, protecting other cranes from an attack by geese, and a love affair with a Demoiselle Crane, having seen off a rival. He met a tragic end, drowning in the Lake on 31st January 1935 when he fell through thin ice. Local papers reported his death: " Joey of Kew Dead"
