Oil painting of William Aiton (1733-1793) by unknown artist. Aiton was in charge of the first small physic garden at Kew in 1759. Head gardener at Kew 1784 to 1793. Putative author of Hortus Kewensis (1789), a catalogue of all plants grown in the Royal Garden at Kew. Father of William Townsend Aiton who succeeded him.
