The Royal Botanic Gardens Constabulary was established in 1845. The 'constables' were either part-time gardeners or Crimean War pensioners. By 1859 the service officially comprised one policeman, three unifromed constables and two gatekeepers. William Thiselton Dyer is the white-haired officer carrying can in the centre; Director of Kew from 1885-1905
