Nymphaea lotus, Willd
Watercolour on paper, no date (late 18th early 19th century). Hand painted copy of an illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. In his Flora Indica, Roxburgh notes that this species differs from Nymphaea rubra in the colour of the flowers only. He also tells of a beautiful rare variety with pink flowers. According to Roxburgh this species is common in pools of fresh water in every part of India, and it flowers more or less the whole year, but mainly during the rains
