Chaulmoogra odorata, R. (Gynocardia odorata)
Watercolour on paper, no date (late 18th early 19th century). Hand painted copy of an illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. This species is native to the Silhet district. In Flora Indica, Roxburgh describes how when the fruit is gathered, the seed is taken out, dried, " and sold to the native dealers in drugs at about five Rupees the maund of eighty-four pounds". He describes further how the seeds are used for skin disorders; the seeds mixed with clarified butter to produce a soft mass which is applied to the affected parts.
